“Charles, come have a game with me.”
Castilla beckoned as Charles entered the parlor.
“I’m sorry Mrs. Lancaster, I’m not very good a chess.”
“Indulge me.”
Charles sighed and took a seat as Castilla made the first move. Soon a game was under way.
“You know Charles, you can call me Castilla.”
His surprise at her openness to him was apparent as he messed up his next move. She smiled politely.
“It has taken me a while to adjust to the changes in this house I’ll admit.”
She made her move on the board and Charles had no doubt in his mind that she would win the game.
“Yes, I am sorry we barged in like this so unexpectedly. I am forever grateful that you let us into your home.”
“Our home Charles.”
She placed her hand on his forearm reassuringly. The first signs of kinship since they arrived almost a year ago. They finished their game in silence until Castilla uttered,
“Check mate.”
